Habits Reflection

April 24, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

When looking back on the semester I have greatly progressed in my journey to have more of an innovative mindset. After practicing the main habits for about four months now, I have been able to experience the world in a different way. With a child’s eye, I have gained back a sense of wonder. By embracing ambiguity and failing forward, I have become more comfortable with acceptance and change. Finally, with creative confidence, I learned that the most unrealistic ideas can turn into fantastic realistic ideas once you are confident enough to express it.

I never really noticed how many bad habits I had been practicing before this class. When looking at the main habits, I didn’t really have any of these prior to this class. Before, I was super stubborn and thought there only had to be one way to do things. During my journey this semester, I have been enlightened and had a pretty big change of mindset. The habit that I believe I progressed with the most over the semester is failing. In the past when I failed at something I would be really sour and give up which is a really negative reaction. Through activities like mind maps and the prototype challenge,  the idea that feedback and time can help fix something to make it better, finally sunk into my system.

Not going to lie, before taking this class I thought MIDE 300 wasn’t going to be the most beneficial class in my academic journey. However, I was wrong. I have learned more life skills that are far more beneficial than knowing something like what the powerhouse of the cell is. This class challenged me to be more receptive to ideas and that failing is not just okay, it’s probably the best thing that can happen to a project because you can understand what you did wrong and think about how many ways you can do better. Both of these ideas do not have to just apply it to MIDE, but for any class or work project. Overall, these habits not only create an innovative character, but I feel like it overall creates a better person. With a child’s eye, it makes the world seem more interesting. With embracing ambiguity you are now more flexible and ready to change. With failing forward, you have a less negative attitude if something doesn’t go your way and you find ways you can better yourself or something else. Finally, with creative confidence, you develop determination,  even if you are unsure, you are able to keep pushing forward in order to meet your end goal.

Test and Iterate

From start to finish, this project was a lot more complicated than I was originally anticipating. After starting with the constraint map, I was a little nervous continuing on with the project. This is because I had never done anything like it before, so I was worried I wouldn’t hold up to the standards my professors were anticipating. Then for the next challenge, trying to come up with 50 brainstorming ideas was really hard. I was stumped after idea 10. Fortunately, I was able to see what other students thought processes were on the MIDE site which helped inspire me to complete the next 40. After the hardship of coming up with ideas, the concept board came easy. However, it did make me nervous when I saw that everyone else looked differently. But I was proud of my work and how I thought it best summed up my brainstorming ideas with a personal and universal touch to it. It was from that point on where I started to get really excited about the challenges because I like to do more hands-on activities. For the three-concepts project, I knew right when I read the prompt that I wanted to make a video. I was fortunate enough to choose the family activity the night before this project was due so I got my family to assist me so we can do something different that’s not a board game. I did run into a roadblock when I was trying to come up with a prototype. However, after thinking about all the ways my concepts were related and then conversing about it with my peers, I settled on a 30-day challenge. When creating this challenge I wanted to add some excitement to my daily routine. I chose activities that I have enjoyed in the past but haven’t fully had the opportunity to do due to my hectic college schedule.

Before creating my prototype I started getting into a routine that was like a blackhole. Yes, it was productive, however, I started to find my activities less and less intriguing. After beginning my 30-day challenge, I have found that I’m excited with every new day that comes. This is because I have something new to look forward to that changes every day. I appreciate having a variety of activities, yet have some consistency so I can elaborate and improve the experience. For example, go on more complex adventures or dive deeper into a book. By adjusting my activities will allow for more innovation.  Another reason why I like the 30-day challenge is because I can see ways in which I can improve it.

One way that I’ve already transformed my prototype is by inserting pictures of the activity I completed on my challenge calendar. Therefore, I can visually see my progress. Even though I am six days in, by looking back at what I have done has given me a sense of accomplishment and a boost of encouragement to continue this journey. Another way I can improve my prototype is by making two activities instead of one (one in the morning and one at night). Therefore, I can keep the repetitiveness of it (like read books) yet it will allow me to try new things at the same time.

A wow factor that I could use for my project is inputting videos instead of using photos. At the end of the challenge I can string the videos all together to show my journey throughout the 30 days. What inspired me for this was my Video 365 application. For the past three years, I have been documenting a second each day of my life. When New Years comes around, I string all 365 videos together. This allows me to reflect on my past and see all of the happiness that year has brought me, and help me bring back good memories that came from it. So if I do something similar to that with my challenge it will have more immediate results and allow me a higher sense of accomplishment.

Overall, this design process was a lot harder than I was originally anticipating. At first glance all of the activities seem “easy-peasy lemon-squeezy,” however, when you dive in,  it’s a lot more complicated. Trying to think outside the box is really difficult and takes a lot of time and effort to work through ideas until you reach a solution that you’re happy with. In terms of the design hierarchy, I believe that creating the prototype hit the usability phase of the pyramid since it incorporates all the basic ideas that were considered before and transforms it into something tangible. Proficiency and creativity will come after the prototype has been tested for a while so I can properly alter it to become as innovative as it can be. I’m excited to see how this process will progress in the future. After using this design process, I am more confident to tackle other projects with the same kind of tactics to grow an idea into something better.

Prototype

After creating my “Three Concepts” video, I was a little stumped on how I would make a prototype from it. When thinking about what all three of these ideas had in common, I realized that all of these were things that I was trying to incorporate into my daily routine. From there, I thought it would be a good idea to make a calendar showing this routine. However, I thought it would get boring and repetitive. After conversing with Caitlin, who had the idea of her 30-day challenge, I realized it would be the perfect touch to tie my three concepts (family bonding, working out, and productivity) together. Incorporating the 30-day challenge to my daily routine (containing my three concepts) will allow me to maximize productivity with my work/chores while pushing me to do activities that I like doing but haven’t had time to do. The main challenges I wanted to focus on were photography, cooking, exploring, re-learning piano, biking, reading a book, catching up with friends, trying new movies, and spa days. I solely wanted these 9 topics because it will allow me time to practice my skills (especially with cooking and piano), as well as give me something to look forward to. If someone else were to take this prototype I would want them to try to personalize it in a way that’s fitting for them and have them put in things that they haven’t done in a while but make them happy. Everyone needs something to look forward to during this dark time so doing a routine to be productive and still have time for a fun activity will make the world of a difference in the overall wellbeing of that person.

3 Concepts

Self-care is something that I really want to strive for while in quarantine. Due to the fast pace of college life, it’s hard to really take time for yourself. Now that I have plenty of time on my hands this is something that I can finally work on. I can visualize this concept by hitting all five sections of the pyramid. First for self-care you need to start with the basics, like simple workouts,  eat healthier and get more sleep. The next step is to continue this trend to make it a habit. Once you get the hang of it you can better yourself and the basic things you started with by being more creative about their approach. For example with exercising, you can try new workout plans and/or longer repetitions. Now that I’m in the second week practicing this concept I can already tell I am more relaxed and happy.

With productivity. I can really only see this concept going up to the fourth level of the hierarchy.  First, you want to settle yourself and get comfortable with a plan, then you want to make a habit to ensure your productivity lasts. The more you practice productivity the more you can tweak it to become more efficient. For me, I really want to stay on top of things since we are now in remote learning. In order to make sure I do things in a productive manner, I have made a calendar with a schedule from start to finish so I can keep track of assignments. My day consists of waking up around 10, getting breakfast, going for a run, lunch, then school work, dinner, and finally a family activity to end then night. This concept has already been changing my work ethic, I’m curious to see how it will progress in the weeks to come. I hope that somehow I can find innovation within the pursuing weeks while practicing productivity.

For my third concept, I really wanted to focus on building a better relationship with my family. Over the past couple of years, everyone seemed to distance themselves with other obligations, leaving little time for family bonding. Now that we are all stuck together we have to relearn how to live with each other and be creative with ways to make us get along. This concept will definitely have to use all five layers in order to ensure that we don’t want to kill each other by the end of the month (this is just facetious). So far my family has been doing an activity every night after dinner, in order to spice things up, we rotate who gets to pick the activity. So far we have played a lot of card games, seen a lot of movies, etc… I know that we will get tired of those games soon so we will have to be more creative to keep everyone entertained.

    Concept Board

March 26, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

For my concept board, I wanted the main focus to be the house. I made this the largest object due to how much time I am spending in it due to the quarantine. Surrounding the home I tried putting objects I thought would relate to the public but with an emphasis on my personal experience. My family likes a routine so I expect things to stay the way they are for the following weeks. How my family goes about their day is first to do our work (the books and zoom). Following that we all go for a walk/run to get some open air and exercise (the runner). After that my family and I rotate who chooses and cooks food for that day (hence the hibachi cooking on both the left and right side). I added the Clorox wipes and the no toilet paper sign to incorporate objects that are commonly talked about on the news and are rare nowadays due to its popularity with combating the virus.  I put a picture of my dog Oreo sleeping and a do not disturb sleeping mask to show how much I, and (assuming) a lot of the population are getting a lot more sleep now since they have a lot more free time. I put the pictures of the birds and trees because ever since I’ve been home I’ve noticed more wildlife out in the wild. It may be because of the weather but maybe because there are fewer cars on the street and commotion. To top it all off I added blobs of the virus all around the collage to show how this virus is everywhere.
I really wanted to put pictures of myself and things around my house to give my concept board a more personal and realistic feel. Originally, I was going to go for a darker tone palate for my color scheme (since we are in such a dark time), however, the more pictures I found a lot of them were light-colored. I then figured that this change of colors could show how you can make something light out of the darkness which I think is the main theme in this time of negativity due to the virus.

    Brainstorming

March 26, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

It was incredibly hard to come up with 50 ideas. I tried thinking about things that I had been doing already which only made up about 10 ideas. What I have been doing at home is really focusing on self-care to help boost my health, so I have been eating healthier and working out more frequently.  I then tried thinking about different categories of lifestyle, like food, health, and technology. That helped me create more ideas.  I still was a couple of 10s short, however, so I went to the brainstorming page on the website to gain inspiration from other students. That helped me reach my final goal of 50.  When deciding to pick the top five, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. I thought it would be a good idea to pick 5 universal ideas that not only I can do.  This brainstorming exercise helped inspire me to try new things to spice up my life during the quarantine.

    Constraint Map

Never in a million years would I think that I would be a semester away from college, have to take my classes online, and barely be allowed to leave my house. There is so much negativity in the world due to the coronavirus, however, the virus has brought some beauty back into the world as well. People can become so entranced in their work and daily routines so having it all come to a halt means that there has to be a major change in lifestyle to accommodate. Part of my new routine is having breakfast with my mom while we watch NBC news. One of our favorite sections is the Today Show with Hoda and Savannah. One of the segments they have been implementing is showing the positive ways people are coping with the change. Whether it’s common TikTok dances that families are doing together or musicians streaming free concerts, it shows that people are trying to make the best out of the situation.

An example of the world coming together after a tragedy is the 2010 Haiti earthquake. This event took a devastating toll on the Haitian community. However, governments and nonprofits all across the globe came together to help support Haiti in their time of need. This event didn’t impact the entire world, however, it did bring countries together in a time of need.

Even though it does suck to stay inside all day with minimal activities to do, there is a beauty in it as well. I have become a lot closer with my family now since we spend 24 hours together. In addition, thanks to the internet we are able to connect with peers or check in on celebrities which helps bring the world together.

    Inspiration – Week 4

March 5, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

For the past three weeks for my inspiration, I have been alone, so this week I thought it would be a good idea to be around my peers. Amisha Chhetri and I decided about a week ago that it would be a fun idea to cook from scratch and not use our technology. This past Wednesday we went over to Kress and put our phones in Amisha’s room. From there we made homemade pizza and cookies. It was challenging to figure out the recipe and how long it was supposed to cook for but that motivated us to be creative with our approach to making it. Fortunately, it ended up turning out really well. While we ate we just conversed about topics in the world and our viewpoint on it. It was nice to get another perspective about world issues. This week inspired me to stop being on my phone as much and just take in the world around me because not only will it allow me to be more creative with how I approach things, but it also allowed me to connect more with the people around me.

    Inspiration-Week 3

February 26, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

For this week I decided I would try something that wasn’t as active as the past weeks. When reflecting on what I thought would inspire someone one the first things to come to mind is music. Normally, I don’t listen to music that often so at first I thought I would just commit an hour to listen to one of my usual playlists. However, to take it one step further I thought it would be a good idea to listen to music that I don’t typically prefer. That kind is rap. Typically I like listening to music that’s easy to follow, and rap is usually word heavy and hard to memorize. After sitting down and playing “Chill Rap Vibes” on Spotify and solely focusing on the music I started to really enjoy it. By listening to a different kind of music has inspired me to try new things because you never know what you’re missing until you try it.

    Inspiration Week 2

February 19, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

For my inspiration project this week I had no idea what to do. When Monday came around the corner with the sun shining and the weather being abnormally warm for February I thought it would be a good idea to take a hike, something I had never done in this area before. I drove 10 minutes away to Dales Ridge mid-afternoon and began my journey. The farther I went into the 2.5-mile trail, the more immersed I felt with nature. I began noticing small details in the trees like woodpeckers as well as my other senses were heightened as well. I had not felt this sensation in a very long time, not just because I have been inside for most of the winter due to the cold, but because I have normally been too focused on work or other distractions. By completely freeing myself from both distractions allowed me to reignite my senses and start thinking and feeling in a new way. Going forward, I would like to make more time to completely break away from distractions like my phone or work so I can allow more time for my brain to relax, allowing for the possibility to be inspired.

    Inspiration – Week 1

February 11, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

To practice inspiration, I decided I would make it an objective of mine to go for a run each day. From the past, I have noticed that exercise always helped me work through problems and sort out solutions quickly so I thought I would make it a regular activity. After doing this exercise for about a week now, I have noticed that I have been inspired to start tackling my homework assignments in a more organized manner. Due to this motivation, I am now a week ahead of schedule with my homework. This has led me to have more time to hang out with my friends and get their perspectives on certain topics like pop culture events, which in turn will allow me to be inspired to do more fun things.  In addition, it has allowed me to go to bed at a more decent hour. Allowing me to reach serendipity.

    Engagement!

January 15, 2020 by Natalie Notz Leave a Comment

What I have discovered over the years is that I’ve developed a habit of being silent in class and sitting back and waiting for the time to run out. In all honestly, his practice has unfortunately made me not excited to learn. I hope that by being more engaged in the classroom with the material and my classmates will allow me to be able to break my personal norm and bring back my excitement to learn. After the first lesson, I can already see myself coming out of my shell by participating in the activities given and that makes me really excited for what’s to come in this class.
