My first concept is to be more proactive rather than sitting inside all day which is an easy temptation. A very easy trap to fall into is watching TV but I want to be proactive by working out and reading. I hope to do things that will make me a better person physically and mentally. The parts of the hierarchy that this adheres to is reliability and proficiency. Having a schedule of when I can do certain things such as watch TV sets up restrictions for myself that I must adhere to. Having a plan of working out and reading will make it easier for me to be consistent with my plan. Having an actual idea of what I should be doing everyday will help guide me to being more active overall. Proficiency is also relevant because I am actively trying to better myself by being proactive.
A major roadblock that the Coronavirus has presented to everyone has been communicating with other people who we are separated from. Thankfully the technology available to us allows us to supplement social interactions with programs such as Zoom and FaceTime. Similar to Maslow’s hierarchy level of self esteem, Design hierarchy’s basic requirements relate to maintaining social interactions. Humans are social creatures and need to socialize in order to stay healthy using a video call is one way I plan on satisfying that need. It also lets us stay up to date with family and see how their health is.
One of the benefits of living at home with my family is the access I have to high quality, healthy food that I usually do not eat. At school I eat what my fraternity chef cooks for us and it usually includes some type of fried food which tastes good but is not healthy. Since I have been home I have been able to cook my own meals using high quality ingredients such as organic chicken, beef, and vegetables. Since I am preparing the food myself I also know what is going into my body so I am to control the levels of grease and unhealthy additives. The process of cooking my own food covers two tiers on the hierarchy of design: creativity and proficiency. Creativity is a major part of cooking and when I cook my own food I am able to experiment with recipes. Trying different recipes allows me to express my creativity in a way that I can test whether my creativity works (tastes good). Cooking healthier food also pertains to proficiency because my diet is making a better person than before. I feel much healthier and happy when I eat the “cleaner” food at home rather than the greasy food at school.
