Creating my constraint map was a very inspiring activity for me. Reading about past pandemics and how they have been dealt with as well as positives to this outbreak has allowed me to reflect on my time stuck at home in a different way than I previously have. Learning about other pandemics and how they turned out provides a sense of comfort. The same types of social distancing measures were put in place during the SARS outbreak and proved to be successful therefore it has given me hope that it will prove successful again in modern times.
It is amazing to see how communities are coming together to support each other during this difficult time. Many people are working to support the elderly from going grocery shopping for them to playing music outside their houses. Many business owners and service workers are forced to innovate as to how they will provide their customers with their service or products. For example many gyms are making workout videos for people to do at home whether they are a member or not. My mom owns a kid shoe store and is delivering shoes to people’s houses as well as facetiming them while she is in the store in order to show them the options and sizes. The camp that I go to has increased their social media presence by doing contests and instagram lives in order to occupy kids for a little bit. As well, many online learning platforms have made their services free for the time being. It is incredible to see how supportive people have been to each other during this hard time
Although it stinks to be stuck at home all day there are many positive things that are coming out of this. For one, many factories are shut down which has caused a decrease in emissions. People have more time to focus on themselves, spend more time outside, and focus on their health and fitness. But, once this is all over I wonder if people will make a habit out of their actions or if this will continue to benefit environmental factors.
